Female Pilot Interview - Cindy F.

As we wrap up with our female pilot interviews, we want to thank ALL of our female student pilots for being a part of CHI Aerospace and helping inspire other women to learn to fly!

1. When did you know you wanted to become a pilot?

I’m still grappling with that question. I was intrigued after my first flight, however had been curious off and on for years.

2. What is your favorite part of flying?

I am most satisfied when I get something right and feel in control of the plane. It’s during those times that I’m able to relax, enjoy both flying the plane and also the view.

3. What obstacles have you faced in your flight training?

Weather, weather and more weather (plus my schedule) – and also fear.

4. Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

Honestly, it’s my CFI, Ed –he’s so skilled, his depth and breadth of knowledge is incredible, and he communicates all that so effectively.

5. What is your favorite memory of flying?

Two of them: On my intro flight, it was pretty outrageous to fly over a breaching whale! And I remember the first time I took off. That was pretty empowering.

6. What advice would you give to other women interested in aviation?

Flying really does feel very geared towards men – from physical aspects of the plane to the voices you tend to hear on ATC – mainly male. It’s rare to see women pilots in commercial flights –in fact, it’s only recently that I’m not one of the only women hanging around at CHI.

I’d say to other women - push through and feel you belong. We all need to advocate for women in all aspects of aviation.

7. What are your future plans and goals in aviation?

I had two goals for myself when I started this endeavor: 1) Learn more about flying; and 2) overcome fear. I have met my goals; and then I was inspired to take it even further. I felt emboldened by the respect shown to me by my CFI; and his enthusiasm was contagious. I’m still not sure where or how far I’ll go with flying – certainly only recreational, but already I’ve exceeded my original goals.

8. Besides aviation, what are some other interests and hobbies?

I’m a writer – mainly children’s fiction, but branching out into adult fiction. I love to cook yummy, sometimes-healthy food and bake lots of bread. I volunteer in my town doing children’s programs at my library, and I’m on my town’s advisory committee on aging. Other than that, I love spending time with my family, hiking, going to the beach, and just hanging out.

9. What's something most people don't know about you?

Probably not much, because I’m pretty transparent about everything!
